Do Space and Time Travel Exist According to the Qur’an?

I was pondering and researching after a deep conversation with a friend about the nature of space, time, and the miracles mentioned in the Qur’an. Could these events, often seen as miraculous, hold clues to concepts like space-time manipulation or travel? Below are two fascinating accounts from the Qur’an that hint at a reality far beyond our physical understanding, where space and time appear to be transcended.

1. The Night Journey (Isra and Mi’raj): The Prophet Muhammad’s Ascension

The event of Isra and Mi’raj is one of the most profound moments in Islamic tradition. In a single night, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was transported:

  1. From Masjid al-Haram in Mecca to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem (Isra).
  2. From Jerusalem, he ascended through the seven heavens, met various Prophets, witnessed the divine realities of Paradise and Hell, and ultimately received Allah’s command for daily prayers (Mi’raj).

All of this occurred in a single night, an incredible journey that defies conventional understanding of time and space. Modern physics offers some intriguing parallels:

  • Time Dilation: The Qur’an describes this as an event of one night, but the depth and scope of the journey suggest the possibility of time dilation, where time slows down relative to the observer.
  • Instantaneous Travel: The journey between Mecca and Jerusalem, and then to the heavens, could parallel the idea of wormholes—shortcuts in spacetime that allow instantaneous travel across vast distances.

This event reminds us of the divine power that transcends human limitations. As Allah says in the Qur’an:

“Glory to Him who took His servant by night from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed…” (Qur’an 17:1).

2. The Transport of Bilqees’ Throne: Sulaiman’s Miraculous Request

Another Qur’anic event with profound implications is the story of Prophet Sulaiman (Solomon) and Queen Bilqees (the Queen of Sheba). In Surah An-Naml (Chapter 27), Sulaiman asks his assembly who can bring the Queen’s throne to him from her distant kingdom.

  1. A strong jinn offers to bring it before Sulaiman rises from his place—a demonstration of immense speed and power.
  2. However, someone with knowledge of the Book surpasses this and says, “I will bring it to you within the twinkling of an eye.” (Qur’an 27:40). Instantly, the throne appears before Sulaiman.

This event hints at the ability to manipulate space and time:

  • Instantaneous Transportation: The throne was brought across a great distance in the blink of an eye, a feat that resonates with ideas like quantum entanglement or spacetime folding.
  • Divine Knowledge and Power: The one with knowledge of the Book demonstrates that spiritual mastery, rooted in divine wisdom, surpasses even the physical power of the jinn.

This event underscores Allah’s limitless power, as the Qur’an reminds us:

“Indeed, His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.” (Qur’an 36:82).

Connecting the Two Events

Both the Isra and Mi’raj and the transport of Bilqees’ throne share key elements that challenge our understanding of space and time:

  1. Instantaneous Travel: Both events involve rapid transportation across vast distances, akin to modern ideas of wormholes or quantum teleportation.
  2. Time Manipulation: In the Mi’raj, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) experiences a journey that seems to transcend ordinary time constraints. Similarly, the throne’s transport happens “in the blink of an eye.”
  3. Divine Knowledge and Power: These events highlight that Allah’s knowledge and power are far beyond human comprehension, encompassing dimensions we are only beginning to theorize in physics.

What Does This Teach Us About Space and Time in the Qur’an?

The Qur’an, while not a book of science, contains verses that inspire reflection on the nature of reality. Events like these remind us that space and time are creations of Allah, subject to His will and command. They also align with the idea that the universe operates on principles far more profound than we currently understand.

As modern science explores concepts like relativity, quantum mechanics, and wormholes, these Qur’anic accounts resonate in fascinating ways. They encourage us to see the universe as a reflection of Allah’s infinite wisdom and power, and to approach both faith and science with humility and awe.

In the end, the message is clear: Allah’s dominion over space, time, and all creation is absolute. For believers, these stories are not just miraculous events but signs of a deeper reality that point us toward the greatness of the Creator.

“So blessed is Allah, the Best of Creators.” (Qur’an 23:14).
